What are dental implants?
This is a new and permanent way to replace one or more missing teeth. It involves placing an artificial ‘root’ to provide a base for fixing replacement teeth, so that they fit, feel and function like natural teeth with more than 95% success rate.
Three parts to a dental implant
1) The implant– screw that serves as a root for the new teeth, which his permanently attached to the jaw.
2) The abutment – a permanent connector that supports and holds a tooth or set of teeth, which the doctor can place and remove.
3) The crown (or prosthetic tooth) – the part of the tooth you can see, made of zirconium or porcelain for durability and good looks.
Who may benefit from getting an implant? Anyone who may: - Have missing teeth - Difficulty chewing - Looking to replace missing teeth – without having to take it in and out of the mouth, as opposed to having dentures, partials, crowns and bridges.
Why get a dental implant?
It is a permanent solution to help improve chewing and long-term results.
What is the implant material generally used? Dental implants are made of solid Titanium anchor which is placed below your gum on which a porcelain crown is attached so that the new tooth blends in with the other teeth.
How many types of implants are there?
a) Single tooth implant – when only one tooth is implanted. For example, following an accident or periodontal disease.
b) Multiple teeth implants – is a permanent way to replace dentures and/or partials for people who are losing remaining teeth, but still have healthy gums and surrounding teeth. They can have two fixtures implanted and the crown attached, leaving other natural teeth intact.
c) All on 4 – This involves replacing a full upper and/or lower set of teeth. Placing just 4 implants and then a full arch of teeth attached on top.
